Ethiopian Opals Now Available!

While most commonly referred to as Wollo, this Ethiopian province can also be spelled/translated as “Welo” or “Wello”. Currently, all spellings are considered valid, although Wollo seems to be the preferred spelling among English speakers.

The nation of Ethiopia, in north-eastern Africa also produces some beautiful specimens of volcanic opal.
The hydrophane variety known as "chocolate opal (aka "hydrophane fire opal") is found at Yita Ridge, near Mezezo (the woredas, or district of Mafud Mezezo Mojana) in the Amhara Region of the Ethiopian highlands. The "Wello Opal," also known colloquially as "Crystal Fire Opal" is found to the north of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, in the province of Wollo.

Opal Color Classification Precious opal is divided into numerous sub-groups depending on
its body color, incorporating matrix, size/shape of the areas of color. Thin pieces of precious opal can also be attached to, laminated to, or backed by foreign material forming an opal "doublet," or glued between a clear glass cap and a foreign backing (potch, glass or ironstone) to form a "triplet." These are sometimes referred to as "assembled opals." Both of these last constructions can produce attractive durable gems, but are much less desirable than gems made from solid opal. Opal is typically cut into a cabochon, although highly transparent fire opals can be faceted. Opal's color varieties are classified as: "Black Opal" (black body color) which has three designations from dark to light (Black 1, Black 2, Black 3), "Semi-Black" of "Grey" (dark body color), "Light" (between semi-black and white), "White" (hydrophane opal with very light body), and the rare "pineapple" psuedomorphic opal (ikaite) from White Cliffs in NSW, Australia.

General opal classifications are: "Boulder Opal" which is opal on a dark ironstone matrix (typical occurrence: Quilpie, Queensland); "Crystal Opal" which is transparent to semi-transparent black, semi-black or white opal which has a play of color (typical occurrence: South Australia and New South Wales); "Fire Opal" or "Arananjado Opal" which is translucent to transparent, with yellow, orange, or red body color (typical occurrence: Querétaro, Magdalena Jalisco, Mexico); "Contra Luz Opal" which is a precious opal where that only displays a play of color when held up to the light (typical occurrence: Opal Butte, Oregon); "Matrix Opal" or "Mass Opal" which has thin seams of precious opal in an ironstone matrix (typical occurrence: Andamooka, South Australia).

I purchased a fairly large lot of this Greenish Beryl in slab form. Although it isn't as "translucent:" as the fine Beryl costing hundreds of dollars it will make a fabulous piece of jewelry and rare too. You won't see
this any other place as far as I know; I've looked.

Aquamarine is characterized by a pure sky-blue, bluish-green, orgreenish-blue colour, very similar to the tint of sea-water; hence its name,

and the old saying that this stone when placed in the sea becomes invisible.

Aquamarine of a deep shade of colour is very rare; it is found, in small amount

and of a fine deep, sapphire-blue, at Royalston in Massachusetts, U.S.A. A

distinction is sometimes made between sky-blue beryl and beryl of a

greenish-blue or bluish-green colour, the former being considered as aquamarine

proper and the latter referred to as Siberian aquamarine. All pale bluish and

greenish beryls are, as a rule, however, included in the term aquamarine.

Sid Pieters discovered Pietersite in Namibia in 1962. He registered the find in Britain and published his discovery in 1964, and the stone was named in his honor. Though many believed that Pietersite could be found only in Namibia, in 1993 a similar stone was discovered in China's Hunan province.

Pietersite is "brecciated," an Italian word that means a combination of minerals and rock held together by a fine-grained sediment; in Pietersite that "sediment" is quartz.

Any white spots seen in Pietersite is Quartz, you could say that quartz is the host. Blue is the favorite of all the colors seen in Pietersite and comes from Namibia, Africa. Browns, golds and reds are also found and as I understand come from China.

Early in 2009 Gaby quit her job with an international company and started creating more jewelry pieces and establishing Christe Jewelry (officially launched on January 15, 2010).

In December 2009 Gaby took her jewelry to the next level when she found wire jewelry. Wire was a to Gaby a new and interesting technique in jewelry making; an even more personalized and sophisticated way to create jewelry. After trying it, Gaby knew that this was the direction to go.

Gaby has a fabulous tutorial for sale and with her permission I have posted a link to her Etsy Shop which she just opened.

I get a lot of inquiries about how to wire wrap and since there are numerous free tutorials on the traditional way to wire wrap a bezel I thought everyone would appreciate this technique.

One reason I like Gaby’s bezel is that you can see the beautiful stones. Sometimes there is so much wire it takes away from the beauty of the stone and you all know I’m all about the rock.

Gaby has other tutorials as well, like these fabulous earrings! The wire work is impeccable.

Usually marketed as "Norwegian Pearl granite." In some marketplaces, the lighter variety is
called " Norwegian moonstone" and the darker variety as "Royal blue pearl granite" or "Emerald pearl ..." also spelled laurvikite. Without direct light the stone looks grey and black, just beautiful.

Larvikite is a light to dark gray coarse grained feldspar-rich grock that exhibits light blue "flashlike reflections" on some surfaces; the reflections, which come from individual anorthoclase grains that exhibit a chatoyant-like appearance, are frequently referred to as a pearl-gray iridescence, opalescence, or even
labradorescence (in allusion to the appearance of labradorite).

Larvikite has many trade names: Birds eye granite, Black moonstone, Blue Norwegianmoonstone, Blue pearl granite, Blue granite, Blue antique, Blue pearl, Bluepearl fjord, Emerald pearl, "Labradorite," Larvik granite, Marina blue star, Norwegian pearl granite, Norwegian moonstone and Royal blue pearl granite are
those I have seen. As is apparent, some of these name are unfortunate misnomers, particularly from the stand point that terms like granite are included; certainly larvikite is not a granite in the laguage of petrography
and it is hardly such in the usual sense of the word as used in the building/monument stone industry.

Neon Apatite Now Available

The Discovery of Neon Apatite

In the 1980s an important new discovery of this gem was made on the island of Madagascar off the coast of Africa. This bright, well saturated electric blue to blue-green colored stone became known as neon apatite. The color is natural, and no treatments or alterations are required to achieve it. The color is close to that seen in the best Paraiba tourmaline, and is very attractive, but of course at a price which is only a tiny fraction of that of Paraiba Tourmaline. So if you are interested in that bright color, but cant afford the $20,000 per carat for Paraiba, then Neon Apatite is a reasonable and fully natural alternative. These electric colored stones have become by far the best known variety of this gem.

The Madagascar deposits were heavily mined for a period of about 10 years and produced quite a bit of gem material. However, most of the production has now ceased and the deposit is generally considered mined out. During the time of production, prices were comparatively low. Prices for gem quality neon apatite are slowly beginning to increase because of the popularity of this gem and the lack of new supply.

This is a really good video for learning how to make a viking weave bezel setting for Cabochons. It will take some practice to get good even loops for the bezel, but it just like everything else, practice makes perfect. There is nothing worse than sloppy wire work! The sparkle of druzy is amazing. The formation of the tiny crystals occurs after molten rock quickly cools, trapping gas within it as it solidifies. Gasses cause crevices and cavities in the cooling rock. Nutrient-rich groundwater later flows through these gaps and crevices, depositing layer after layer of minerals which crystallize on top of each other so the resulting encrustation is called druzy The process takes a few hundred or even a few thousand years.

After my dog had surgery I got this humorous note from a friend. I can relate! LOL

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she
laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and
listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said; "I'm
sorry, your duck (Cuddles) has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed; "Are you sure?"

"Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead." replied the vet.

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any
testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."
The vet rolled his eyes, turned around, and left the room.

He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As
the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind
legs, put his front paws on the examination table, and sniffed the
duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes
and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room.

A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the
table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat
sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly, and strolled
out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said; "I'm sorry, but as I said, this
is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a
bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck's owner, still in shock,
took the bill. "$150!" she cried. "$150 just to tell me my duck is
dead?"

The vet shrugged; "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it,
the bill would have been $20, but ... with the Lab Report and the Cat
Scan, it's now $150.

(I only wish my bill had been $150.00)

Loving Labradorite

Labradorite is truly a fascinatingly beautiful mineral. Its a mineral whose charm is not fully noticed and may be overlooked if not viewed from the proper position. Generally a dull, dark looking mineral with no special virtue until the colorful shiller is observed glowing on the surface. Labradorite can produce a colorful play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections called labradorescence. The usually intense colors range from the typical blues and violets through greens, yellows and oranges. Some rare specimens display all these colors simultaneously.

The color display is from lamellar intergrowths inside the crystal. These intergrowths result from compatible chemistries at high temperatures becoming incompatible at lower temperatures and thus a separating and layering of these two phases. The resulting color effect is caused by a ray of light entering a layer and being refracted back and forth by deeper layers. This refracted ray is slowed by the extra travel through the layers and mixes with other rays to produce a light ray coming out that has a different wavelength than when it went in. The wavelength could correspond to the wavelength of a particular color, such as blue. The effect depends on the thickness and orientation of the layers. If the layers are too thick or too thin no color shiller is seen. The labradorescence is truly a one of a kind mineralogical experience and must be observed in person in order to truly appreciate its beauty.

Agates

Agate is a type of chalcedony, usually at least slightly translucent and banded or with inclusions. It forms in concentric layers in a wide variety of colors and textures. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in host rock.

Many agates are hollow, and in such cases the center commonly consists of quartz crystals directed towards the free space, forming a crystal-lined cavity, or geode. A layer of very fine crystals is known as "Drusy" or "Druse". Often the Drusy will be the color of the mineral underneath.

Agate has a hardness of about 7 on the Moh's scale. The name is derived from its occurrence at the Achates River in southwestern Sicily.

In many traditions agate is believed to cure the stings of scorpions and the bites of snakes, soothe the mind, prevent contagion, quiet thunder and lightning, secure the favor of the powerful, and bring victory over enemies.

Metaphysical Properties: Agates in general are known for being lower intensity stones. They are considered stabilizing and strengthening influences.
